Alp descent in St. Stephan
The colourful conclusion of a busy alpine summer
At respectively the beginning of each September, the world-renowned Alpabfahrt in St. Stephan takes place. On this day around 120 cows and heifers, carefully adorned with flowers and ribbons, make their journey back into the valley. Upon reaching the valley, the animals are greeted by spectators from near and far.
On the festival square at the St. Stephan airfield, there are festival caterers serving food and drinks. Local products and handicrafts can be bought at different stands through the square. A regional yodel formation and an Alp horn group provide musical entertainment. There is a diverse afternoon programme awaiting you every year.
The cattle enjoy the Dürrenwald and the wonderful grasses and herbs, which mother nature already has ready for them, for a good 80 days before they head to lower grounds. Those wishing to visit this wonderful piece of land are warmly welcome to do so during the mountain summer weeks. In addition to taking in the view or a hike in the beautiful mountain region surrounding the Flöschhorn, head to the Alp Dürrenwald to take the weekly tour of the cheese factory and learn all about the production of alpine cheese.
