Cave path
Explore three caves in Oberwil

Zwärgliloch, Schnurenloch and Mamilchloch. These are the names of the three caves, which want to be explored by cavers both big and small. The oldest stone tools in the canton of Berne to be made by human hands were once discovered here. These are exhibited in a history museum in Berne. With plenty of scrambling and ladder climbing, this route is perfect for cavers.
The Höhlenpfad goes from Oberwil train station or Höhlenpfad car park to the rocky area of Gsässgrind, where the three caves Zwärgliloch, Schnurenloch and Mamilchloch can be found. In Zwärgliloch, which is easily accessible, there is a barbecue area with cooking grate, firewood, table and bench.
If you've got sturdy shoes, aren't wearing good clothes, and take a head torch or flashlight with you, then you can continue on the adventurous tour to Schnurenloch and Mamilchloch. The circular track takes you over a mountain path, through a natural tunnel and up a ladder into Schnurenloch. To get to Mamilchloch (rock milk), you will need to use the freestanding ladder, which is 10 metres long. Here you can step inside the mountain
and, thanks to the mystical lighting, admire the fascinating chambers and passages.
Schnurenloch was very diligently explored by the Andrist brothers between 1928 and 1953. During excavation, over 5000 bone discoveries were made, 95% of which could be traced to the cave bears, which are now extinct. No remains from prehistoric men have ever been found, but the oldest stone tools in the canton of Berne to be made by human hands were discovered here. Today these are on display in a history museum in Berne.
