Gryden high altitude circular trail

On the way in the unique crater landscape at Betelberg

At the Betelberg hides a fascinating place with an extraordinary landscape: The Gryden. The slogan on the Höhenrundweg Gryden is: Hiking - Marvel - Enjoy!

The hike starts at the top station of the Betelberg cable car (Leiterli). The first section of the mountain hiking trail leads along the Leiterli AlpRundweg, which offers an interesting mix of original information and adventure stations. At Alp Steinstoss the path is narrower and offers a breathtaking view of the probably most beautiful valley end of the Alps. Afterwards the path leads in a short, steeper ascent over the limestone formation Stübleni. On its northern side the crater-like, bizarre rock landscape "Gryden" spreads out.

The extraordinary rocky landscape in the Stübleni area fascinates not only geologists and biologists, but all those who enjoy a unique landscape. The terrain consists of gypsum rock: the slow dissolution by rainwater and the subsequent underground infiltration creates infiltration funnels (sinkholes), which give the terrain a crater-like aspect. At the highest point you have a fantastic panoramic view and on a clear day you can see the Simmental, the Saanenland and the mountain beauties of Freiburg. From now on, the path leads downhill to the turning point of the circular hike. At the turning point a short detour in the direction of the refuge is worthwhile. Pause, take a deep breath and enjoy is now the motto.

The crater-like landscape, which resembles the moon landscape, is better admired standing up than walking. The path to the hut winds its way past the depressions. Those who tackle this additional loop need to be sure-footed and have a head for heights. If you continue along the path, you will reach the Trütlisberg Pass, which is the gateway to the Saanenland. Back to the turning point, the Höhenrundweg Gryden leads on the south side back towards Steinstoss. On the last section of the path from Steinstoss to the top station of the Betelberg gondola lift, you have the option of finishing the Leiterli AlpRundweg or making a detour to the original Alpine flower trail.
