If a composer were tasked with scoring this hike, he would probably use his “film music” quite dramatically: with drum rolls and fanfares the scene would be unveiled, upon which the forthcoming landscape drama would unfold – a decidedly cheerful and delightful drama. The groomed circular trail prepared by a piste vehicle begins at the bus terminus near the Hotel Sparenmoos. Gently ascending, it leads southwest along the slope. Step by step, a wonderful panorama gradually spreads. With each step, the view broadens over the extensive community of Saanen and the mountain peaks dressed in winter covering that surround the wide plain. At the stately alpine hut Vordere Hüsliberg, the trail turns north. Here you have to decide: those who want to hike the classic circular trail take the left path at the fork; those content with the shorter option take the right path (which leads back to Sparemoos in about 40 minutes).
As the viewing direction changes, so does the character of the hike. Now the massive Hundsrügg is in view and beneath your feet a path that ascends only slightly but heavily. To stay with the musical comparison: a grave adagio with a dragging basso continuo would be an apt picture. Yet again the scenery changes completely in the area of Nüjeberg/Uf em Hubel. The trail turns sharply eastward here, and suddenly the eye is offered a veritable indulgence: extensive snow-covered meadows and raised bogs form a harmonious ensemble with many small woods and a few mighty fir trees. Soft violin sounds would be the fitting accompaniment to this moving landscape scene.
The return takes place partly on the same trail as the outbound route. A short section goes steeply downhill until it merges with the aforementioned section from Vordere Hüsliberg of the short circular trail and leads northward to the forest. On mostly level ground along the forest edge, later descending in gentle curves on the alpine road, the path leads back to the starting point, Sparemoos.
