Starting high above at 3,000 metres on the Plaine Morte glacier, this mountain bike trail launches riders into an unforgettable alpine adventure. Demanding from the outset, the route winds through a striking mineral landscape, skirting Lake Huiton, crossing the Col des Gendarmes and climbing again to Col du Pochet. From there, it dives towards Les Violettes and rises once more to reach Petit Bonvin. The descent continues into the wild Tièche valley, where waterfalls, cliffs and the forests of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park create a stunning contrast. The trail then leads through Cordona and Venthône, before finishing in Sierre, with an impressive total descent of 3,000 metres. Reserved for experienced riders, this route offers remarkable variety: rocky ridges, alpine woods, remote valleys and wide-open panoramas. A section of this route was part of the Enduro World Series, a sign of its outstanding technical quality.

  • Approach

From the A9 motorway exit in Sierre (east or west), follow the signs to Crans-Montana (approx. 20–25 minutes). Once in Crans-Montana, follow the directions to the Violettes cable car parking. Parking is available on site. Then take the Barzettes–Violettes gondola (Violettes Express), followed by the Violettes–Plaine Morte funitel to reach the trail start.

  • From Sierre’s SBB/CFF train station, ride to the SMC funicular station and take the funicular towards “Crans-Montana, gare” (final stop, approx. 13-minute journey, departures every 20 minutes). After exiting the funicular, ride for around 7 minutes to reach the Violettes Express gondola, or take the free shuttle bus to the “Crans-Montana, télé Violettes” stop. Then take the Barzettes–Violettes gondola (Violettes Express), followed by the Violettes–Plaine Morte funitel to reach the trail starting point.

  • An underground car park and an outdoor parking area are available on site.

  • Starting from the upper station of Plaine Morte at nearly 3,000 metres, this ride sets the tone from the very first metres: an alpine adventure begins in a lunar landscape of lingering snowfields and raw rock. The trail descends straight into technical terrain: loose, exposed and demanding full concentration. Far below, the Huiton lake lies nestled in a rocky basin. The route skirts it to the left before reaching the Gendarmes col, a narrow and spectacular ridge crossing.

A short climb follows, leading up to the Pochet col. The panorama opens up and the atmosphere becomes more alpine. A fast, rocky descent takes you to the Violettes hut (CAS), where a break is well worth it. After a few turns and a 5 km climb, you reach the Petit Bonvin, with stunning views over the Tièche valley.

This marks the start of the second big descent: a committed singletrack drops into the valley, winding between cliffs and waterfalls, sometimes narrow, sometimes flowing. The contrast with the high mountain landscape is striking. After crossing the Tièche stream, you enter the Pfyn-Finges nature park. The trail becomes smoother, traversing alpine pastures and small woods before arriving at the hamlet of Cordona.

You then transition gently into Venthône, riding through charming vineyard paths. Final stretch: a flowing, fast descent of dirt and gravel leads you to the outskirts of Sierre. The route ends at the funicular station, with the sense of having completed a wild, challenging, and spectacular alpine crossing.
