Will the Plaine Morte glacier give way to a lake? In how many years? In a poetic spirit, we call it the "Maybe Lake." It would be the first lake in history to be named before its appearance.

Why this strange idea? The Plaine Morte glacier is unique in the Alps for its plateau shape and its surface, close to that of Zurich airport. But it is melting, and quickly. Given its current known configuration, the high Plaine Morte valley, today hidden under millions of cubic meters of ice, could one day host a new mountain lake. Maybe.

  • Approach

To reach Crans-Montana by car, take the A9 motorway (Rhône motorway) exit named "Sierre Est". At the motorway exit, continue straight ahead. At the roundabout, follow the signs indicating "Sierre/Crans-Montana", then pass through the villages of Venthône, Mollens, Randogne, and Bluche. Once you arrive in Crans-Montana, follow the signs to reach the Violettes cable car parking.

The journey time is about 20 minutes from Sierre "East".

  • The Crans-Montana resort is accessible from the Sierre train station via SMC bus company or the funicular, as well as from the Sion train station with postal buses.

The free shuttles of the SMC bus company serve the entire Crans-Montana resort.

Then take the cable cars up to the summit of the Violettes and change to the funitel to reach the Plaine Morte.
