At the beginning of each September, the world-renowned Alpabfahrt in St. Stephan takes place. On this day around 120 cows and heifers, carefully adorned with flowers and ribbons, make their journey back into the valley. Upon reaching the valley, the animals are greeted by spectators from near and far.
On the premises of HwR AG St. Stephan, a festival restaurant provides food and drink. Local produce and handicrafts can be purchased at various market stalls. Musical entertainment is provided by folk music groups. For a good 80 days, the cattle enjoy the dry forest and the marvellous grasses and herbs that Mother Nature has in store for them before they return to lower altitudes. Anyone who would like to pay a visit to this marvellous spot is very welcome during the weeks of the mountain summer. In addition to a look or a hike in the beautiful mountain world around the Flöschhorn, you can learn a lot of interesting facts about the production of alpine cheese on the Dürrenwald Alp during the weekly cheese dairy tours.
