The Saane rises high up on the Sanetsch and flows down the valley to Saanen. Its name comes from the Celtic ‘Seganona’, meaning ‘goddess of the waters’. In the holiday destination of Gstaad, idyllic hiking and walking trails lead through beautiful scenery along the entire course of the river. The family barbecue area in Feutersoey between Gstaad and Gsteig is particularly stunning and makes a wonderful place to relax amid meadows and forests. From here you can enjoy leisurely walks upstream towards Gsteig or downstream to Gstaad. With its turquoise water, the Saane is one of the defining images of the region and the starting point for unforgettable experiences in the great outdoors.
The Grosse Simmer and Kleine Simme rivers come together near the village of Zweisimmen – hence its name (‘Two Simmes’). Families can enjoy the covered barbecue area beside the Kleine Simme, above the village near Mühleport. Children can play and build little dams along the little stream next to the river. The barbecue area is easily accessible on foot from Zweisimmen railway station. The beautiful walking trails along the banks of the two rivers are also ideal for a stroll. The two Simme rivers define Zweisimmen and make a wonderful place to relax just beyond the village.
The Chalberhönibach flows through a quiet side valley off the tourist trail. Just 200 m from the Waldmatte restaurant, you’ll come across a lovely barbecue area on the bank of the stream, built by schoolchildren after a flood. A walk upstream leads through pristine natural scenery to beautiful stretches of the stream, and, after 3.5 km, to the source at Gumseeli. The valley can be reached by car via Saanen. Hike alongside the babbling mountain stream, past lush meadows and steep rock faces. It’s a hidden gem for those seeking peace and quiet!

The rustic Wintermatte inn deep within the valley serves hearty meals. Hiking into the Heuberg area or following the rushing Turbach creek to Gstaad makes a welcome break from the daily grind. It’s another little-known yet rewarding spot for those seeking peace and quiet in our lovely Gstaad holiday region.
The Rischbachquelle spring rises in a moorland landscape above Zweisimmen – a rich habitat for animals and plants. The steep climb to the barbecue area is rewarded with the view of Zweisimmen. It’s a wonderful place to take some time out. Fresh spring water bubbles directly from the mountainside. The Rischbachquelle is just a 15-minute walk from the railway station, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the beauty of the Zweisimmen area.
The Tungelschuss is located right beside Lake Lauenen, just 400 m from the car park. From the lake, you have a spectacular view of the waterfall, which collects the waters from the Stieretungel and Chuetungel mountains and hurtles down the rocks to the Lauibach.
Further into the valley, 2 km south of Lake Lauenen, masses of water plummet down the 180-metre-high Geltenschuss. One section of the hike to the Geltenhütte takes you behind the water wall of the Geltenschuss. No one stays dry! It’s the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day. Colourful flower meadows surround the Geltenschuss – an utterly instagrammable backdrop!
The Burgfälle lie in a spectacular gorge near Gsteig. The path leads from the Hotel Bären to the Innergsteig power plant. Turning to the left, the path winds around the falls. This breathtaking natural spectacle of waterfalls and dizzying gorges is a closely guarded secret. Climb the trail, up to 150 m above sea level, to see the falls at their most breathtaking. Parking is available at the power plant or the valley station of the Sanetschbahn. This hike can be combined with a trip to Mount Wispile in the Valais or the Sanetsch reservoir. It’s a rewarding excursion for adventurous types in the Bernese Alps.
