The round trip starts in Matten near St. Stephan. The first altitude meters are covered on the asphalt road towards Färmeltal. Before the viaduct, the route branches onto a slightly steeper gravel road. It zigzags up through the forest, which given the southern exposure doesn't promise cool temperatures. Once you reach Gfell, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Simmental valley's end.

The descent on the hiking trail is not technically very demanding. The trail flows nicely to ride and even the 180° turns are never too tight. Above Färmelstrasse, it first goes right over a hiking trail on the meadow, then continues flat but more technical through the forest. A narrow, rooty trail winds along the hillside until another small road is reached. From here, it's pure flow (with a short climb) all the way to St. Stephan.

From St. Stephan, the route follows the bike path back to Matten.

The route is not marked for mountain bikes.

  • After the turnoff towards Matten, there are parking spaces along the road (near the barbecue area).

  • The route follows hiking trails. Here, hikers and bikers share the path with the Trail Knigge from Lenk-Simmental Tourism.

  • Thanks to the southern exposure, this route is already snow-free early in the year and the trail dries quickly even after rainfall.
