Starting from the Sunnbüel cable car base station, the route follows winding hiking trails, first along the river and then into the heart of the wild and romantic Gastern Valley. The trails here are partly moss-covered, the steps springy, and the view opens across the natural valley. The ascent via Gurnigel gives an additional view of a breathtaking natural world – a truly amazing sight! Once on Sunnbüel, the trail leads around the picturesque Arven Lakes before heading up to the cable car summit station.

  • Approach

By car via Spiez and Frutigen or the car-train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg.

  • How to get to Sunnbüel

Once an hour, the AFA bus runs from Kandersteg Railway Station to the base station of the gondola lift. Journey time 10 minutes.

  • Parking in Kandersteg

Find the best places to park in the local area. There's nothing in your way now, so engine off and trail shoes on!

  • Starting at the Sunnbüel base station in Kandersteg, the trail runs along the Schwarzbach stream, always slightly uphill on winding hiking paths directly into the Gastern Valley. The first sign of Gastern is the distinctive climbing arch bridge, followed by narrow trails that lead runners deeper into the unspoilt valley. The ascent via the twisting tracks of Gurnigel gives a view of impressive stone formations all around and rewards runners for every extra metre climbed. Once at the top, the trail leads around the turquoise Arven Lakes* before guiding runners up to the summit station.

*these dry out naturally during the summer months.
