From Unter dem Birg, a solitary path/mountain trail leads to Hinterberg/Hinter Engstligen. From the cable car station, head left across the pastures to the northeastern corner of the forest, then ascend in a zigzag fashion, first through the woods, then across open terrain, into the wildlife-rich basin of Hinterberg (marmots, ibexes, chamois). From here, there is a connecting trail to Vorderengstligen.
