It starts with keen eyesight. High above Kandersteg, trail runners on this route are soon rewarded with a brilliant view across the ancient Gastern valley. The wide plateau of Spittelmatte is also an eye-catcher, but the real highlight of the trail on Sunnbüel are the Arven Lakes hidden deep in the mountain forest. Once you leave the turquoise gems behind, you will find yet another impressive vantage point beneath Üschenengrat.

  • Approach

By car via Spiez and Frutigen or the car-train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg.

  • How to get to Sunnbüel

Once an hour, the AFA bus runs from Kandersteg Railway Station to the base station of the gondola lift. Journey time 10 minutes. The gondola then takes you comfortably and safely up to 1936 m / 6352 ft. above sea level.

  • Parking in Kandersteg

Find the best places to park in the local area. There's nothing in your way now, so engine off and trail shoes on!

  • First up and then back down again. After the gondola ride, there's a short descent from the Sunnbüel summit station to the old Stock summit station. Above Gasterntal valley, the trail then turns towards Spittelmatte. The plateau below the summit of Altels ends in the Swiss pine forest, which also brings you to the Arven Lakes, created by melting snow and ice. Now the path leads up to another level beneath Üschenengrat. From here, trail runners can head directly back to the Sunnbüel summit station.

  • The more extreme the conditions, the more important your equipment. Longer mountains tours, for example, require weatherproof clothing and a small running backpack with food.

  • Must have:

    Emergency blanket

    Mobile phone

    Snacks and water

    Wind- and rain-proof jacket

    Nice to have:

    Trail running shoes

    Trail running backpack

    Headlamp

    Sticks
