In high winter, the high peaks of Blüemlisalp in the east and Fründenhorn and Doldenhorn in the south ensure that hardly a ray of sunlight reaches the valley basin. Lake Oeschinen is therefore something like a piece of the Arctic in the Bernese Oberland. A thick layer of ice covers the surface of the lake. Provided there is a sufficiently long period of cold weather beforehand, the lake can usually be entered without any problems.
There are two loops of different lengths on the lake. The long loop can be shortened. Depending on the conditions, only the short loop may be open.
